Story-Crafting Survival Tools II: Have Wiki Will Travel

I'm pulling some notes given in this post, for this here one... So, sometime last week I noticed all my story notes were not fitting as well into my little black book as they previously had. I also noticed my little black book was often nowhere to be found when I actually wanted to reference something I had come up with. I figured this would be a problem... BUT THEN I DISCOVERED THE INTERNET.

I went to Wikia and started a Wiki. So far, it's been a surprisingly good way to keep everything I have in my head or in my little black book or on scraps of paper somewhere strewn about my desk, in working (and my god!) searchable order. I was even considering opening it up to public edits eventually, and seeing what kind of vandalism... er, additions friends, fans and random people on the internet would contribute. For now, though, it's pretty much become my bigger, more accessible little black book -- I invite you to take a gander at it, here:

I had to make a Google Doc to keep all of my world building organized and to be able to edit from different locations. The Wiki thing seems like a nice thing for after the fact, but not for keeping notes and modifying them later on. There are some notes I wouldn't want the curious follower to know just yet.

Troof! I still have my little notes here and there... and everywhere... But the wiki has been a great way to really fill-out certain characters and worlds (but only things I'm willing to share at this point, of course! Hehe) and in turn has given me insight into things like what I'm missing and absolutely must define within my story, how narrow or broad any given character's history has been explored and should continue to be explored, and just ideas for further stories, in general. It may and quite probably will, replace the website for the series, or at least certain pages of that, in due time...

This is a fascinating idea! I've never created one, but you may have just inspired me to do this for my own story. Question: can you secure certain wiki pages to make sure that not too much background information is given away before you're ready?

Sorry for the lateness in my reply, RC, but the answer is KINDA! :) In Wikia, you can't make a *completely* private Wiki, aqnd by that I mean that I can make pages private enough that only registered users/admins can edit them... but if you install MediaWiki or other Wiki engines on a private SQL server, you can modify it so that it's only able to be edited by you. The amount of content you divulge is therefore, entirely up to you!
